range water planning and land purchases for park expansion. And he was one of the founders of Stephenville Little League.

While making a list of Evans’ accomplishments, remember he served on the Pecan Valley MHMR Board of Directors, was named United Way drive chairman, worked on fundraising for the March of Dimes, Red Cross, the American Heart Association, Cancer Fund and was a director of the local chamber of commerce.

As is the case with many families, the acorn did not fall far from the tree. “I am a lot like my dad,” Roberson said with a smile in her voice. “I’m motivated like he was. I’m a member of the Lions Club, I’m a Chamber Ambassador. I’ve been on the board of directors for the Lions Club, on the board for the Heart Association. I have

served on a lot of different boards as a result of seeing him do his civic thing. He was always helping with different fundraisers. He did a lot outside of his job.”

Emily was always proud of her father, but one episode in her life stands out, even today.

Evans was the commencement speaker for his daughter’s graduation in December of 1984.

“I got to receive my diploma from him when I graduated,” she said. “I was the only one who got to do that.” That would have been special enough, but Evans had a surprise for his daughter. He wrote ‘The Spirit of Tarleton,’ an anthem honoring the university’s part in education and shaping the world.

“Yes, I am the spirit of Tarleton,” Evans penned. “I was born in 1899 from
