During the frst half of the last century, “singing schools” were popular in big cities and small communities alike, and were especially popular in rural Texas. Often held in week-long sessions, and usually at churches, the schools drew people from miles around who were eager to learn more about singing four-part harmony in what would eventually be called the “Southern Gospel” style of music. The schools were sometimes promoted and sponsored by music publishing companies of the day.
Most of the singing schools, and many of the churches, died out over time. But in the Highland Community of Erath County, specifcally at the Highland Missionary Baptist Church, the tradition is alive and well. Members carry on a custom that began with brothers Ernest and Walter Rippetoe, many years ago. Both brothers were gifted singers and musicians, and Walter was a member of the famed “Stamps Quartet” for many years. From all accounts, they brought the frst singing school to Highland. Although their musical legacy is an important one, they brought more than music to the Highland Church. Walter was an assistant minister for some time, and Ernest was the church pastor for 30 years.
