Artist Marc Chagall once said, “In our life there is a single color, as on an artist’s palette, which provides the meaning of life and art. It is the color of love.” Love is surely what Sasha Caswell, a Junior at Tattnall County High School, had on her palette when she recently created a work of art that was recognized in the April issue of On The Move , the offcial magazine of the Military Child Education Coalition. Her creation began as an art project dedicated to her military father and turned into a national recognition for Sasha.

Ms. Linda Tuthill, Art Teacher at TCHS, assigned a project, a collage, for her students. Sasha decided that she would do something for her dad, SFC William Caswell, who is in the Army, before he left for Iraq. She made a collage of things that symbolized his military life. Sasha copied the song, I Am Proud to be an American , by Lee

Greenwood, continuously until she covered the sheet of paper. She chose this song for the background because it fts the pride and strength of our military. She then began to think about the things that reminded her of her dad… his uniform, dog tags, and his job in the Army. Her dad mentioned the bronze statue of the American soldier kneeling in honor of a fallen comrade and being comforted by an Iraqi girl. The hands in the center symbolize parent and child; for Sasha it symbolizes the relationship that she and her father have. As the “wheels” began to turn, Sasha worked hard and completed her drawing.

Sasha’s dad is a Liaison Offcer for the 1 st Brigade Combat Team at the Tactical Operations Center. This is his frst time in Iraq, having been there for 5½ months, but he has served in the Army for 23 years. He carried the original drawing with him to Iraq, and it hangs over his bed in the
