Hometown Living At Its Best 59

A Tribute to my father, William Helwig

My dad heard about Wreaths Across America and wanted very much to attend. He chose the cemetery in Glennville because my mom is buried there. Dad was a true American patriot and loved his Country very much. He served in World War II and Korea. Afer his death, we found a video he had made for a local university, who was interviewing World War II Veterans. We were surprised to fnd he lied about his age, and joined the Army when he was only 16. He told of all the hardships the soldiers endured, fellow soldiers being killed, cold weather, lack of good food, and even coming across a concentration camp. As his daughter, I was very honored to be with him at Wreaths Across America December 11, 2010. Although the weather was rainy, I thought the servicewas very touching. All the Veterans were asked to come forward and my dad was the only World War II Veteran. When it came time to place the wreaths, I noticed some of the younger veterans helping Dad as he was having difculty walking. He was so happy to place a wreath on Mom’s grave. It was very touching to see all the people placing wreaths on the graves. It is something I will

never forget.

Dad was looking forward to returning in December 2011, but unfortunately he passed away in March 2011. He has joined

his beloved wife of 59 years, Marilyn.

I would especially like to thank June Dixon for making that day a verymemorable one. I will cherish the photos taken by her daughter, Gail, and cousin, Ernie. I look forward to returning in December and for many years to come in

remembrance of my father, William Helwig.

Kathy Helwig Young, daughter of William Helwig U.S. Army, World War II and Korean War Veteran (1928-2011)
