« Previous Page Table of Contents Next Page »As I drove down to Glennville, Georgia to the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery to attend the Wreaths Across America service I wondered what it was all about. It was cold, cloudy, rainy weather, but as Commander of the VFW Post in Mount Vernon, I wanted to be there to honor one of VFW Post 10229’s lifetime members who had recently
passed away, LTC James Lester.
I was surprised to see the large gathering and the diferent ages represented. Many Veterans, like me, were there to remember the men and women’s sacrifce to our great Country. Mrs. Elaine Lester, the coordinator of the project, directed me to the gravesite of my friend, LTC Lester. I made the short trip up the hill, paid my respects and went back
down to the service which was about to begin. We all had a chance to lay wreaths at the headstones of the men and women buried in this cemetery. I had the honor of laying one for my friend and mentor, which was the highlight of my day. I noticed when the JROTC Cadets laid a wreath they would step back and respectfully and properly salute each grave, which was a ftting tribute to these fne past warriors. I was impressed with the program and hope to return in December 2011 to once again honor our Veterans. It was a remarkable sight seeing all those Christmas wreaths
adorning the graves of our Veterans.
