Continuing to “Grow” our youth
David Avery
The Greater Tattnall Chamber of Commerce is truly a Chamber that is involved in the entire community from Cobbtown to Glennville and all points in between. One of the visible ways this involvement is most noticeable is its work with the youth in the county on the Junior Board of Directors. The program was established in 2007 with a total of twenty members. This year’s board consists of forty-eight juniors and seniors from all over the county. They attend school both at Tattnall County High School and Pinewood Christian Academy.
Requirements for entry into the organization include not only superior grades but also community and school involvement. Their applications are critiqued for substance and professionalism. Each member is required to complete a government involvement each year by attending a city or county council meeting. In addition they are required to participate in a civic activity each semester. These projects include working at nursing homes, raising funds for Tattnall C.A.R.E.S., helping with the Christmas projects, completing projects at the Gordonia Alatamaha State Park and a number of other activities. They are, also, required to do two business tours per year. These tours have included informative trips to Rotary Corporation, Environmental Wood Products, the Nelson Hotel and others. The monthly meetings are designed to inform and educated the members regarding our local governments, the obstacles facing business owners and the importance of participating and giving back to one’s community. The sponsors of the Junior Board include Kim Tatum, Kay-Lyn Tatum and David Avery.
The future of our county as well as the Chamber lies with our youth. The Board of Directors of the Greater Tattnall Chamber of Commerce feel it is our obligation to take an active role in seeing that they are up for the job!
